The metals used in older orthopedic surgeries were prone to complications and the bone here is infected and necrotic, a condition known generally as osteomyelitis. There is sequestration and involucrum formation. I believe the material was iron. This is from a surgical procedure in the 1930s.

Transplant surgeons keep donor lungs alive outside of a body, hooking them up to venerators so that they continue breathing, while circulating a solution which mimics blood. This technique allows for doctors to better prep for the surgery and assess the health of donor lungs before transplants.
