For me this issue is very much similar to the “If my Child were Gay” post (linked for anyone interested). The fact of the matter isn’t that they aren’t supporting LGBTQ rights in an ‘appropriate’ way but the fact that they’re equating the rights of real people to fictional characters which they primarily fetishize and read gay porn of.
I’m not judging people who do this or saying they’re in any way ‘bad’ and I’m not saying that slash fiction is wrong (because I sure as fuck don’t think that). What I am saying is many people seem to believe that their enjoyment of slash fiction and pairings immediately makes them an ally - in support of LGBTQ rights. There is also a huge issue of erasure when it comes to anyone who isn’t ‘traditionally gay’ or who they can’t identify with via fanfiction - in many cases there is no support for folks who don’t fall into the mold (attractive, male, cisgendered, etc.) which is set by these slash pairings. Anyone outside of this box gets ignored when it concerns their rights. I have dealt with fangirls who outright say they don’t care about lesbians just gay guys or people who like slash fiction but say anyone who is transgender is “disgusting”.
You are allowed to enjoy slash fiction but the fact of the matter is when you have to turn to fictional characters to show support for people who are dealing with legitimate discrimination it becomes problematic.
And yes. Please insinuate that I do not support LGBTQ rights. Obviously that is the case.
